School History

Eastwood was built in 1954 as a Baptist Church before the Houston Independent School District bought the property and admitted the school as an internal charter in 2001. The building was renovated and expanded to include classrooms, science laboratories, administrative offices, a library, cafeteria, and a university-style lecture hall, among other details. The school was originally intended to be a relief site for Austin High School. As a part of a Houston ISD bond, Eastwood Academy has expanded in the form of a new, two-story wing attached to the original building. The building was completed in 2017 and evolved into a full-fledged college preparatory focused high school serving grades 9–12.
Since then, Eastwood Academy has admitted students from all around the Houston area. Students are required to apply and are admitted based on their grade point averages, standardized test scores, or matrix score.
Today, Eastwood Academy boasts a 100% graduation rate, a 100% rate of acceptance to higher education, as well as impressive Advanced Placement and SAT score averages, which are competitive with other top Houston schools both public and private.
In 2024 Eastwood was ranked as #6 in Houston ISD’s top school ratings. This is consistent with the history of excellence in academics that Eastwood has maintained since its inception, having achieved myriad achievements such as being named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2017, and awarded an “Exemplary” TEA Accountability Campus Rating in 2011.
Eastwood Academy has grown from repurposed church to one of Houston’s most academically distinguished small high schools—celebrated for its strong college-prep culture, rigorous programming, community integration, and modern facilities. It's strong academic traditions and community-oriented spirit remain firmly established.
